On June 2, Prof. Smyth was presented with the 2018 Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates at its 70th annual gala award ceremony in the Faculty Room of Low Library. The award recognizes contributions to undergraduate teaching at Columbia. Winners' names are added to a plaque in the Robert M. Rosencrans Reading Room of Butler Library. Smyth was cited for "exceptional teaching accomplishments in the field of Civil Engineering and for a steadfast commitment to enriching the lives of undergraduate students outside of the classroom ...". The citation noted not only his "stellar" teaching, but also his involvement in Student Steel Bridge Competitions as an adviser over the years as well as his five year service as the Faculty-in-Residence in Hartley-Wallach. Joining in the celebration, which occurred as part of the 2018 Reunion Weekend festivities, were Dean Mary Boyce (who gave introductory remarks), Vice-Dean Shih-Fu Chang, much of the Faculty of the Dept. of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (of which there are several former winners of the award), students, Columbia alumni, and family.
